History
The company was created in 1996 originally called Advanced Advertising. Advanced was one of the first website development companies on Vancouver Island, B.C. developing web sites and selling directory listings for Yellow Pages (www.yellowpages.ca) a portal website for British Columbia Telephone Company (BC Tel.).
Advanced built up a client base of almost 450 customers mostly located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Two offices were opened, one in Nanaimo and the other in Victoria and employed 12.
In 1999 BC Tel. (approximately) was purchased by Telus another telecommunications company. Telus decided to perform all sales for Yellow Page directory listings in-house resulting in the original owner of Advanced choosing to sell the company.
In the year 2000 Jay Somerville - with a past in marketing, websites, electronics and computers - saw an opportunity and purchased Advanced Advertising. Unfortunately when the business was re registered under Mr. Somerville the original name could not be retained. The reason was Advanced was not incorporated and another company used the name in a neighboring city. Lesson learned, YOU HAVE NO PROTECTION FOR YOUR COMPANY NAME UNLESS YOU'RE INCORPORATED.
Mr. Somerville created a new name based on what the company did, “web and communications” resulting in the new name Webacom Media Corporation.
Webacom started as a home-based business and in only a few years was well established with 7 staff in a commercial office location. The reason for a commercial location was simple, people take you more seriously and a team is far more capable of performing high quality work versus a single operator. Please note this may not apply to many types of home-based business, this is more directed towards the needs of a full service web design company.
As Webacom grew over the years' two new services were offered, a full service marketing department including content writers and database programmers. Webacom based on past experience found to truly help any given business you needed to offer all levels of expertise without relying on out sourcing.
After the service expansion Webacom was able to attract larger customers and in some circumstances with assets in excess of ten billion dollars. In addition the geographical area expanded from North America to clients all over the world including Japan, Australia, Ireland, Hawaii and a number of other countries.
Currently Webacoms’ core business remains the same, serving clients of all sizes and helping businesses succeed. They now have 13 full time staff, 3000 sq. feet of office space and a satellite location in Edmonton, Alberta.
